Silent Cicada

I happened to glimpse this cicada as I was hanging out my washing. They are rarely seen here. One of the things I love about going to Christchurch in the summer is to hear the high chirping chorus from the tall trees. This one doesn't appear to be one of that tribe, judging by the markings, and it had nothing to say.

Earlier, while looking for ladybirds on the fennel I saw a tiny pale blob floating in the air. I had to take a macro of it to see what it was- a minuscule Novaranea orb web spider. She was actively working on her web and I was able to get front and back shots. I was amazed at the extent of her web. All I could see with my eyes were the two diagonal lines. See extra shot.
