Alder

We normally associate this tree with wet ground and the banks of lakes and rivers, but around here I also find it in drier locations, along old tracks and woodland edges. At this time of the year it is unmistakable as the female catkins turn into woody, cone-like fruits which mostly stay on the tree all winter.
