In Between Bach and Mozart

A new cello player joined us at tonight's rehearsal. In true Cello Nerd fashion, the three members of our cello section descended upon this woman in order to ogle her instrument.

She opened her case to show us a cello built by German luthier, Leopold Wilhelm in - - - - 1753. We stared in disbelief, but she explained that she has had the instrument appraised and examined for authenticity. It was pretty banged up and needed quite a bit of work when she purchased it. But - - - 1753! That's a mere 3 years after the death of Bach, and 3 years prior to the birth of Mozart. And of course, 23 years before the USA had come into being.

It is incredible to imagine the hands that have held this instrument and the music it has made over a 263 year lifetime.
