Practical Solution

I took this photo in a restaurant where we were eating last night. The back legs of the chairs on that side of the table had been cut off and were resting on a ledge. If the chairs had been placed in front of the ledge, precious space in the already small dining room would have been wasted, and only one row of tables would have been possible.

The table was close enough to the ledge that there was no chance of accidentally scooting the legs off of it!
