Standing up to the law

“The law is a ass, Sir!”

February Dickens Challenge Week One - Oliver Twist

View of the old county court house, taken from beneath the canopy of a monument - the statue horse is small, the building is far away
(misquote, Father Ted).

The 19thC building was originally the borough court house and borough adminstration offices and public hall combined. It is now the home only of the County Council, and needless to say the grandest (most other grand things having been crudely demolished or wantonly neglected) and best kept building in the town which is otherwise utterly run down. Them and us, them and us, tsk.

The monument/fountain was built in 1900 to honour Queen Victoria on a visit to Ireland. It was destroyed by the 1980s, a bomb I think, as part of a republican/nationalist statement, I think, and was left a white stump for many years - a bit of a miserable sight.  Recently, and seemingly for no particular reason, but possibly just because they could see it from their windows and it spoilt the view, the powers that be restored it faithfully and accurately to its former glory. When the current Queen of E made her historic visit to Ireland a couple of years ago, a 24 hour watch, armed police, no less, was placed at this fountain, for fear of another statement attack being made.

Another view from under the canopy in extras.
