Photography

I’ve had a brilliant day out in London with blipper LizW and another member of our Wednesday Creative Photography Group, Christine.

First stop was Wapping Hydraulic Power Station to see an exhibition of the photography of Annie Leibovitz. It’s in an area full of old wharf buildings which have now been converted into expensive apartments with river views. The Power Station itself is a very interesting old building which still retains its original industrial persona, see first two extras (taken on my iPhone because phone photography was allowed but camera photography was not). The New Portraits exhibition is a continuation of a project that Annie Leibovitz began over fifteen years ago. The portraits exhibited reflect the changes in the roles of women today and features women of outstanding achievement including artists, musicians, CEOs, politicians, writers and philanthropists. It was very interesting, very well attended and very modern.

More jumping on and off tube trains gets us to South Kensington and the Victoria and Albert Museum, see extras three and four. We were there to see an exhibition of photography by Julia Margaret Cameron (1815 – 79). She was one of the most important and innovative photographers of the 19th century. Best known for her powerful portraits, she also posed her sitters – friends, family and servants – as characters from biblical, historical or allegorical stories. The exhibition runs till the 21st February and marks the bicentenary of her birth.

I can recommend both of the above if you’re interested in photography.
