Life in Newburgh on Ythan

The Newburgh Venus

Whilst walking across the dunes this morning I came across this primitive yet enigmatic figurine. After discussion with an archaeology friend I have come to the conclusion that it is, without doubt, of ritual significance, probably a fertility figure of some great antiquity.

The object clearly has close affinities with the Venus figurines from the European Upper Palaeolithic. Most of them have small faceless heads, wide hips, and legs that taper to a point. Various figurines exaggerate the abdomen, hips, breasts, thighs, or vulva. In contrast, arms and feet are often absent, and the head is usually small and faceless.

Mts T thinks that it is a concretion of rust and iron from the WW2 barbed- wire defences that were built on the beach in 1940. Silly idea!

Great fun this do-it-yourself archaeology for amateurs and dreamers!
