Windy Crossing of the Grand St. Bernard Pass

Only windy today but the weather is often a problem on this historical pass. There has been a hospice on this 8,100-foot col between the Rhône and Pennine Alps for nearly a thousand years. St. Bernard and his friars would patrol the slopes for souls lost in storms. From 1700s the St. Bernard dog has helped many lost or avalanched victims to the safety of the hospice. It was also famous as a route used by Hannibal and his Carthaginian war elephants to wage ancient battles. Click here for more information.. Now, having safely crossed the pass, we are happy to be home again. Tomorrow I shall catch up on looking at some of your wonderful blips of the past few days.

Venice is here for those who wanted to go with me!
