Life in a Northern Town

Day 256: Toy Town

We knew the weather forecast was pretty grim for today but we didn't mind as we had planned to stay in Reykjavik anyway. We decided to walk to the Whales of Iceland exhibition - only about a mile and a half but it was a bit blustery and once we were away from the Main Street the pavements were lethal. However we made it in one piece to the fabulous museum and had the place to ourselves, with free tea and coffee, and like everywhere in Iceland, free, mega-fast wifi. The chap who took our entrance fee had watched us sliding like Bambi over the path and he suggested we need ice chains as the forecast is for today's thaw to be followed by a sharp freeze. Fortunately there was an Outdoor shop next door (there's one virtually next door wherever you are in Reykjavik).

The assistant tried to sell us some £60 chains with which we could probably climb the North Face of the Eiger but I held out for some £10 ones you could tell she thought were rubbish - talk about change our lives! We are striding around confidently and will no doubt fall and break a leg soon enough.

So armed with the ability to walk, we have done just that and are now collapsed back at the hotel awaiting news on our tour tomorrow - 50/50 at the moment.

We climbed Halgrimskirkja, which is a stunning church, and admired the way the city looks like a toy town from above. We've also been back down to the Sun Voyager, and done some souvenir shopping (deep breath, don't do the maths, stick the credit card in the machine). We've also been to the Northern Lights museum which was also very good, and the only way we will see them this time - I've seen them before and Sarah isn't bothered so I didn't book a tour as I know how fickle and elusive they are.

Sarah's is so funny - last night she told me how nice the Dutch driver had been on our tour - of course he was Icelandic. Then she asked if I thought the German couple who were on the tour spoke fluent German. I do hope so! In three days she will be 18; I am in denial about that.

Anyway, back to Reykjavik. Fish and chips have been decreed for tonight - do you think they'll have HP sauce and mushy peas?

Extras - interior of Halgrimskirkja,Sun Voyager again, wild animals, whales and Halgrimskirkja clock tower.

Ps - Sun Voyager, Strokkur and the view from Halgrimskikja - I have made absolutely no attempt whatsoever to post anything original!
