An after-thought

Well-finding took second place today - it was an after-thought because we were in the area really.

A glorious day, full of sunshine and blue skies. We went to Mosedale for a wander along the valley - wonderful. The sky was this blue, the water this clear, the colours this bright. And there was no one else there. Here is one of the many becks flowing into the River Caldew.

We had some lunch and then went along the road to Caldbeck. A walk round a village, a place we are very familiar with having spent several family holidays just outside the village, and then went to find the Holy Well down by the river (see extra). This is a well dedicated to St Kentigern, who was from Scotland, but spent a lot of time in the Lake District, preaching and baptising people. It's a lovely spot for a well, although it will look a lot better in later Spring when there are flowers and the debris and silt from recent flooding has gone. The Church of St Kentigern, famous for John Peel's grave, is close by.

A linked aside

Before we came to live up here, we had a static caravan near Greystoke and spent most weekends there. After all this time, I have only just realised the significance of the name of the site - Thanet Well. Apparently there is a well here, dedicated to St Kentigern's mother St Tenue, but it has been covered up and is in the garage of the house belonging to the owners' of the site. The name of the well is preserved in the sign and I never knew!!
