The old military training camp

According to the guy in the combat trousers who runs a campsite in Whitehorse Woods , more soldiers went through the military training camp here than any other British base in the Second World War.  I was quizzing Mr combat trousers after finishing my orienteering course today, wondering about all the ruined buildings and the great long trench running through the woods.  The buildings were indeed the former military training base but the trench was dug in WW1 in case the Germans invaded and managed to scale the North Downs. They would have faced British soldiers  in the trench ready for battle.  Of course it was not needed and these days the trench provides lots of fun for the local children playing in the woods because 1km of it still winds through the woods and is very visible on my orienteering map.  If you like maps , see the extra;  the trench is the wiggly thick brown line going from east west just south of controlpoint 16.  (The thin brown lines are contours)
