Rail Trestles

Richmond is a city based on transportation. It was founded at its present location because the James River was impassable beyond the Fall Line. Many railways branched out from the city when land transportation gained importance. The advent of the interstate roadway system brought I-95 and I-64. To this day the ease of access to interstates is often touted as a major reason for various corporations and events to come to the city.

Much like the interstates, the railways in Shockoe Bottom are elevated. Indeed, Richmond was home to the first ever triple pass (three sets of tracks crossing one another). Flooding has always been, and will always be, a major concern for transportation through the River City.
