Blue duck Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos

Very rare duck, endemic to New Zealand and with no close relatives anywhere in the world. They are unusual in many ways, with the male helping to raise the ducklings and probably keeping the same mate. They are part of a wider family of torrent ducks, needing fast moving clear water - the water here is clear but stained brown by tannin from the forest floor.
