NZ kaka Nestor meridionalis

Large NZ native parrot - Now very endangered due to predation by introduced animals - stoats, weasels, possums, rats, cats deer, pigs, wasps and dogs. Found in small localised areas of the North and South Island. Habitat destruction by humans is also a very large contributing factor.

The kaka's cry is harsh and is similar to its name. Today they were having a shout off, which also involved a lot of swinging round branches using feet and beaks.

Kaka eat nectar, fruit, grubs and seeds.

This bird was among others living in the Zealandia open sanctuary, where the birds fly free, but can choose to be protected behind a predator proof fence built around a large valley with a lake.
