Sgwarnog: In the Field

The Force...

...is strong with this one.

8yo and I are working our way through the original trilogy, employing a somewhat disjointed thirty minutes a month approach.

Tonight we witnessed the death of Yoda but met the Ewoks a few minutes later so all is well with the world. I was sixteen when Jedi came out, and came at it having seen Star Wars once six years earlier, and Empire once in the intervening years. Far from an immersive experience, but I probably read and re-read the novelisations a few times in the interim. The first time I will have seen the the three consecutively was probably at the uni film society a couple of years later.

It's a few years since I watched them with 11yo. He mainly sat quietly through each and has never wanted to rewatch them. 8yo is much more inquisitive and questioning, and shares her observations. She also needs almost constant reassurance, for example regarding the likelihood of Ewoks cooking and eating our heroes. Tonight's most cutting observation, one which has eluded most in the past forty years of Star Wars criticism: shouldn't Darth Vader and the storm troopers have the same colour uniform, they are after all on the same team.

Should we move on to Episode I, I expect to discover that she will be the first person that really gets Jar Jar Binks, vindicating George Lucas at last.
