Kranji

We fly out tonight from Singapore and so we decided today to take the MRT out to Kranji to pay our respects at the War Memorial. When Tony took school trips to the First World War Cemeteries in France he would direct the kids to look for someone in the memorial books who had the same surname or first name as themselves and then tell them to go and find that person's headstone in the cemetery. He found it always settled them into the right frame of mind for understanding the significance of the memorial grounds. I don't have a family link to this place so I focused on individuals: the volunteer nurse; the young man of 21; the Australian Captain, the Ghurka; the Indian Sepoy with the same name as a young man I once taught, the only soldier I could find from the West Yorkshire Regiment.
And now we are packing and beginning our goodbyes to Yu-Yen and Cary and Singapore, tomorrow we will be home.....
