Casa Battlo

On our last day in Barcelona, we went to see the Casa Battlo which is arguably the finest and best known residential Gaudi building in the city. It's a beauty. I have seen a number of photographs of it in the past of course but what I found particularly remarkable is the inventiveness and  integrity of the design.
Everything had been thought through in depth. The banisters and window catches were ergonomically contoured, the ceramic tiles used in the light well were carefully graded to reflect less light on the brighter upper floors and more light on the lower floors.
One of my favourite areas and one of the most colourful is the roof, where the roof tiles are shaped like scales and the chimneys are decorated with shards of broken and recycled ceramics.
