Botanical Garden

Out and About in Almeria No. 6

This morning we set off to visit El Jardin Botanico La Almunya Del Sur.   I had thought it was in Adra a little way down the Coast but it turned out to be on our doorstep, about 15km near Balerma in El Ejido.

The garden is privately owned and was once a Citrus Farm and, according to the owner, is the oldest house in El Ejido.   It has been restored and we had to walk through the house to get into the garden.   Lovely and rustic furnished in traditional Spanish style.

Although not a huge area, it is packed with 1,000 different species of plants, shrubs and trees.   Some species from Australia, Brazil, the Far East etc.   Winding paths, seated areas, a natural pond and a further water feature which had Koy Carp and some large Turtles....there was even a large toad/frog which had jumped onto a huge Rosemary bush.

As you can see it was a beautiful morning...perfect for wandering around.

Very difficult to choose the photos today, but I have tried to show something of everything and have put four extras on.

It will be different at other times of the year and we will go back again.   A charge of only 3 euros!   and a glass of homemade lemonade with mint and/or mint tea and almond biscuits.

Since the new Tourist Information Office has opened in Almerimar, it is much easier to find out things that would otherwise have remained undiscovered by us all.
