Freedom

I am reading a book at the moment set in Victorian America, more specifically New York. The book is a novel about two female doctors and the struggles they have being accepted in a predominantly male environment.
Anthony Comstock crops up as a character - the Postmaster general at the time - who made it illegal to send pamphlets through the post advising on women's health and methods of contraception. He also confiscated and burned 100's of anatomy books because they were deemed by him to be obscene. He prosecuted doctors for advising women in s dual health and sent many to jail. Basically he was a bigoted, ignorant arsehole who believed women were only fit for breeding.

I saw this row of letterboxes and it made me think how much more freedom we have today. As a woman I never forget that women fought and died for me to be treated equal to men and to have the basic human rights afforded men.

An enjoyable book too :-)
