Ascog Hall Fernery, Isle of Bute

A day trip today to visit this fernery. it has been restored with considerable care and attention to detail and the display of ferns is very impressive and well worth the journey to see them. The fernery was in a dreadful state of repair before its restoration. The rest of the garden of the hall is equally attractive although, as with everywhere else this summer, it has suffered a bit through the weather. Some of the more delicate flowering plants had clearly been damaged by rain.
Spent the rest of the afternoon in Rothesay which has lost quite a bit of its one time grandeur--the Art Deco Pavillion providing the most obvious signs of this. What a lovely building to be in such need of upgrading. The Winter Gardens have however been used to provide a very good visitor centre but that doesn't really disguise the fairly rundown nature of the seafront.
