The River Mersey

In Warrington this afternoon to talk about flooding matters.

Leaving, I passed and decided to have a look at some flood defences off Kingsway. Warrington is particularly prone to flooding, so a lot of investment has gone into defences.

One of the odd things about this town is how hidden it's rivers and canals are. In most places a river like this would be a centrepiece. In Warrington you have to go and find it. In the town centre you could easily miss it. No public buildings line it, it is just off centre, and as it meanders away it gets lost from view. Even the Ship Canal is a bit hidden, unless you cross it and catch a fleeting glimpse of a broad waterway, or know where to go.
