Where the Light Gets In

Birthday drink

forty-year-old wine
to toast my birthday again
amazingly good

My Dad asked me to come into his cellar with him to choose the wine we'd have today. He had an idea of course: this is an excellent wine to begin with, and the forty years that have passed since it was bottled have not made it lose its quality! The "amazingly" in the haiku therefore refers not only to the quality of the wine, but also to the fact that I find it quite astonishing that it should still be this good forty years on.

It was the last of its kind - unfortunately. A good occasion to finish the stock, I think! It's the only time I'll turn 40, after all...
