A Collector of Oddities

Inchcolm Abbey

We decided to take advantage of the nice weather and go to Inchcolm Island for the day. It was an intensely seagully experience as you can see from the photograph. These are Lesser Black-backed Gulls but I also saw and photographed Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Great Black-backed Gulls, Herring Gulls, Common Tern, Eider, Shag and a single Puffin. I got quite dizzy watching birds wheeling about and had to try very hard not to fall into the sea every time I saw a Fulmar.

Inchcolm means Columba's Isle but he was never known to have gone there. The abbey was founded by King David back in the 12th century and continued to the Reformation in 1560. Some of the buildings are in pretty good condition considering how long it has been abandoned.
