Life in Newburgh on Ythan

The transit of Mercury

By far the most interesting thing in my life today was the transit of Mercury. How fortunate we are to live at a time when it is possible for us ordinary folk to see such a thing.
This composite is based on screen shots from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. I have altered the colour of Mercury from black to red so that it can be sen more clearly. In the left hand image the planet is still in the corona and about to pass over the Sun at  lower left. In the other image, taken several hours later, it is sitting over a bright patch about half way across the Sun, again in the lower portion.
