MonoMonday – Heritage

Rippingale’s twentieth century heritage is being the inspiration for “The Archers, an everyday story of country folk”.   It was a local farmer, Henry Burtt, who came up with the idea of a “Farming Dick Barton”.  He lived in the next village, Dowsby, and farmed the local area including Rippingale.

When the BBC (Godfrey Baseley) put the pilot episodes together the ‘Archers’ family and the local area (Ambridge as it became) was based on the Burtt family and the Dowsby/Rippingale area, with the Bull just opposite the manor house.  A couple of years later when they needed photo-shoots etc the BBC adopted Inkberrow (now the home of ‘The Archers’) which was close to the studios, and the local pub changed its name to ‘The Old Bull’.  Jim Latham has done an article on the ‘Birth of the Archers’.
