The other end of the scale

Final day of the English Premier League today and the multimillionaire players will be jetting off for a break. This blip is about the other end of the footballing world and a little bit of magic.

Yesterday Maidstone United went to Gravesend to play Ebbsfleet United in the playoff final of the Vanarama League South. A capacity crowd of 3,800 saw a dramatic game. Ebbsfleet were leading 2:1, both goals from penalties, as the game went into the last five minutes - Fleet fans were already celebrating - when Dumebi Dumaka got the equaliser and after a goalless extra time it was decided in a penalty shoot-out. The Ebbsfleet play who had scored both times during the game was one of the guys who saw his penalty saved and Maidstone United won promotion to the Vanarama National League. The winners of that are promoted to the Football League division 2 which is division 4 in pre-decimal money; a fair distance from Leicester City, Arsenal and co.
