Thoughts of a Mummy

The phone call came that we didn't want.

Just after 9 o'clock this morning, our Nanny Choochie-Face passed away in her sleep.  She lived her life for 98 fabulous years, saw many fashions come, go and come back again, and lived through the war to tell the tale.

To those of my generation she was the original Nan that Catherine Tate performed.  We've chuckled many a times at Nanny's wit, her abruptness and her grumpy comments.  Nanny would sometimes seem quite stern to outsiders, but to those she cared for, her heart was pure gold.

Nanny has struggled to hear what people are saying for a few years, and quite often we'd think she didn't understand what we were saying, but then out of the blue she'd repeat what we had said or ask us about it and throw us completely off guard.

Nanny loved her great grandchildren.  On many occasion, Nanny would love to watch the girls colour pictures, play games and would regularly ask if they are ok when they were quiet.  This is where Nanny got her name Nanny Choochie-Face from.  When DM was first born, Nanny would love to give her cuddles and on so many occasions she would squeeze DM's cheeks and say 'Oooo you've got such a choochie face" or "Come here choochie face".

Nanny would call at 9 o'clock every Sunday, "has Lee got work?, is Jac ok?, are the girls ok?, have you spoke to your mum? have you seen Carla? yep, yep, I'm ok.  Alright then, speak to you soon. Bye"  So many times, Peach and I would wonder if she could hear what we were saying in reply, because nine times out of ten, it was the same questions.   We were always in trouble if we didn't answer, Nanny would worry and then call her daughter or grand-daughter to find out where we are and what we were doing.   I'm sure that if she could've held a smart phone, she would have enjoyed tracking us all 24/7.

We are very fortunate that for the last four months we have had her close to us; she moved to the next village and we all got to visit her more frequently.

98 years, that's really good innings.  Selfishly, we wanted a couple more years with her, but her time was called.

We'll miss you Nanny, the girls will miss you and everyone who knew you will miss you.  Thank you for all that you have done and all of the character that you added to our family.

Sleep well Nanny Choochie-Face, join the stars in the sky and give our love to Grandad Choochie-Face and Rick xxx
