The alien has landed...

well not really but just look at those toes, they are almost prehensile..  It is a day old moorhen, one of several hatched in the reed bed by my boat.  It's goggles must be some sort of protection from the sun perhaps but its bald red head makes me laugh.  There were several siblings and the parents were scurrying around catching insects and water grubs to feed them. 
Moorhens are members of the rail family and don't have webbed toes but still swim very well and they can fly. They are omnivorous and eat berries and seeds, foliage, insects, small fish, amphibians, small rodents and eggs  Above, in the white flowers there were dozens of bees - the most I have seen this year..  My extra was the only black one amongst them all
