Sunset

Today we travelled to Mljet. Passing the town of Korcula in the morning arrived at Mljet just after lunch. This island, including the village in which we are moored, is a National Park. It is famous for its unspoilt natural countryside and wildlife. Apparently until the 1940s snakes (vipers) were a problem, and they killed several people every year. Then somebody had the idea of introducing mongeese (is that the correct plural). Now there are no snakes, but the mongooses are a problem as they still need to eat something, so chicken is apparently quite popular.

We had a long walk in the National Park around the two lakes. The lakes are connected to the sea, so both lakes are tidal. There is a narrow channel between the two, so it is possible to be carried along by the tide from one lake to the other. The first sight on coming out of the forrest is of the smaller lake, the view is breathtaking with the blue water of the lake.

The village where we are moored is quite small, only a couple of shops, one hotel and several bars and restaurants. As with the other places we have stopped there are masses of yachts. Our ship had to leave the harbour briefly to allow the ferry to come in. We are one of three ships moored next to each other, next to us is a group of five slightly smaller ships moored in line abreast.

In the evening we had a wine and cheese party on the top deck. On one of the boats behind us they were having a BBQ. As we had not yet eaten we would have appreciated it if they had tossed us a few sausages, but it was not to be!
