When Oslo became Christiania

Oslo is the original name on the city. It's been a city from year 1000.
After a terrible 3 days fire in 1624 that left only two buildings whole, the Danish-Norwegian king Christian IV decided to rebuild the city and pointed where the location should be. He always named it after himself - Christiania. The roads should be broad and all the buildings should be in bricks to prevent new fires.

This statue of the king's glove is made by Wenche Gulbransen and shows where he pointed.  Most of the people could not afford to build with bricks, so there was several town fires after 1624.

The first step to get rid of the danish name Christiania was to change the Ch to the Norwegian way of spelling Kristiania.

From 1860 people start to use the name Oslo, and in 1925 it became official.  Since we have been in union with Denmark and later Sweden, it's important for us to get back the city's original name.

Just some years after Christiana was built 40-50 percent of the citizens died in the pest. Today we are 0,6 million living here. (5,2 million totally in Norway) You are most welcome to visit!

I have blipped the gloved from another angle.
