This photo illustrates how not to do a monochrome pic.
Initially I set the photo style to monochrome to "see" the picture at the point of taking, but planned to use the RAW (with its colour info) for the final image. Sadly only later did I realise I was shooting just in jpeg, with no RAW file. This left me with a flat image which needed a rather drastic S-curve to create some contrast, with the resultant "soot and snow" image you see above. It is probably the digital equivalent of a poor monochrome film negative printed on an extremely hard paper to compensate.
Tip: if you are shooting in jpeg, using a full-colour jpeg and a more sophisticated monochrome conversion in PP such as channel mixer is a much better way to go.
