I would like to think it is still possible for members of the LGBT communities all over the world to live, love and be happy without fear. However, today's news from Orlando casts doubt on that safety, which we had almost begun to take for granted.

It is 47 years this month since the Stonewall Riots created the impetus for the worldwide Gay Liberation movement (hence the regular Pride events around the world at this time of year). Let's hope that one positive result of today's tragedy might be an outpouring of support for the community in coming weeks and, at least for the moment, drown out the nonsense spouted by hate preachers, misguided politicians and others, who regularly attend pride events to try to poison the atmosphere.
