Moments in Time

"Art is an evolutionary act. The shape of art and its role in society is constantly changing. At no point is art static. There are no rules."
? Raymond Salvatore Harmon, BOMB: A Manifesto of Art Terrorism

It is one of my favourite weekends of the year, for Melbourne's buildings throw open their doors and beg the general public to explore their character and history. Amidst the surprise and wonderment are a myriad of other activities; street performers, workshops, light shows and roaming art. It is indeed a unique experience.

Whilst wandering aimlessly (but with the intense purpose of finding something to blip), I happened across this work located in the NGV Art Studio, (Artists many and unknown). It is, as it looks: Graffiti. What makes it different is that it is sanctioned and as the viewer you are invited to contribute, to display your thoughts, announce your profound opinions or declare your undying love in whatever colour you so choose. It is layer upon layer of moments in time, and the amount of emotion in it is quite overwhelming. It is strange I think, that if on a wall you might walk past it, but as it is in a gallery you stop and read. That one small action allows you to communicate with a thousand people simply by acknowledging that it is there, that they were there, that that moment in time did not, has not gone unnoticed.... it made me smile.
