The Barber

It is a pleasure to see a master craftsman at work, especially when his tools are as vintage as he is - he used a cut-throat, made in Switzerland, with a swirling pattern on the blade - made Mike very nervous when he was waving it near his unprotected neck to show me... He also had all the pewter (?) bottles you can just see, one for perfumed water; another for talc, and so on.

Sr Zé Afonso is 84 years old, Mora born and raised, and began cutting hair on the 3rd November 1948, with, as he put it - O Mestre. His shop is slightly wider than the chair his client sits in, and has a photo of him when he was 24yrs old - a very handsome young man. I asked him if he would ever stop working; he said, "When you stop working, you die, and I don't want to die."
