Blue forever: leaving Baku

Flying north over the Absheron Peninsula en route to Russia - with almost no horizon visible over the endless blue of the Caspian Sea.

The peninsula was at the heart of oil production during the Soviet Union and those activities along with associated industries turned the region into 'one of the most polluted places on earth'.  Significant efforts (and investment) have since been made to clean it up.
