THE BAND ON THE GREEN

Today was chosen by the community at Lawn as the day to celebrate our Queen’s 90th birthday.  After heavy rain last night, we did wonder what the weather would be like, but despite it being a bit windy, it was quite pleasant and there was lots going on including a junk swap, face painting, cream teas and lots of other stalls.

I had made a cake for the Cake Competition - so had to get there quite early ready for the judging and Mr. HCB followed on later.  It was a good opportunity to wander round and chat to people before the Swindon Pegasus Band started playing at 2 o’clock and to hand out books “The Servant Queen and the King She Serves” made available The Bible Society.  It’s a beautifully illustrated short book, which uses the Queen’s own words to draw out the central role of her trust in Jesus Christ, offering an inspiring, multi-faceted insight into a life well-lived for others.

Unfortunately, my cake didn’t win First Prize, but I did share it with lots of people before we left and they said it tasted good - so that was prize enough!  The cup cakes you can see in the collage looked wonderful and won First Prize in that Class.  It was also great to see “Titch” a member of our congregation, who hasn’t been to church for some time as he has been in hospital, so he was enjoying being able to meet up with old friends and listen to the band.

All in all a lovely community day and a chance to meet up with friends, some of whom we haven’t seen for a while - just a shame the Queen couldn’t be there but we know she has probably had enough of parties as they have been carrying on since her actual birthday on the 21st April.

“I declare before you all that my whole life,
whether it be long or short,
shall be devoted to your service
and the service of our great imperial family
to which we all belong.”
Queen Elizabeth II
