Bus Challenge No 90!!

Exeter, Devon – An epic bus journey in search of a Devonshire Cream Tea!!

First bus of the day was to Bristol Airport where we caught a second bus (a new hourly bus/coach service to Plymouth) to the outskirts of Exeter, and then a third bus for the short hop into the city centre.

Exeter is a cathedral city and the county town of Devon, on the River Exe about 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Plymouth and 70 miles (110 km) southwest of Bristol. It has a long and fascinating history, and was the most south-westerly Roman fortified settlement in Britain, during which time the city walls were built (around AD200) and those walls are still largely intact today. During the Middle Ages, the city became a religious center and in Tudor times Exeter was the sixth largest city in England and famous sea captains such as Drake and Raleigh were often seen around the city.

We only had two and a half hours to spend in Exeter but we managed to cram a lot into that time, following a heritage trail around the city and down to the river quayside, visiting the cathedral and of course sampling that oh so naughty, but oh so nice Devonshire Cream Tea!

It wasn’t the brightest of days, and the cathedral was full of preparations for the University’s graduation ceremony, so I’m not that happy with any of my photos. The main photo shows the Burnet Patch Bridge, built by the mayor in 1814 to aid the regular inspection of those Roman city walls, and my extra collage shows a few other scenes from around the city, and not forgetting that cream tea!!

Total bus journey times = 5 hr
Total waiting in between buses time = 1 hr

(It’s been a very long day so I’ll catch up with you all tomorrow…)
