The Somme

Up until last Thursday, the banners displayed on the front of the Civic Centre were encouraging people to register to vote, and of course to use their vote. Which they did.

Talking to someone today who has spoken to a lot of people who voted Leave, the common response is that they voted Leave to "get them out". Whoever is meant by "them" is not so clear.

But enough of the current mess ....

The banners have now been replaced by these (and others out of shot - the brief was an unusual angle).

July 1st is the 100th anniversary of the opening day of the Battle of the Somme. The Queen will be in Manchester to lead the national commemoration. Lancashire lost a lot of its menfolk in that battle - over a thousand of the  " Salford Pals" (the Lancashire regiments were all Pals regiments, so men from the same town were fighting alongside each other) died on the 1st at Thiepval. Through the 1920's and 1930's the 1st was known in Salford as "Thiepval Day".
