Accrington Pals

This day in history - 1st July 1916

Men of the 11th (Service) Battalion (Accrington) East Lancashire Regiment (Accrington Pals) went 'over the top' to suffer devastating casualties.

"The History of the East Lancashire Regiment in the Great War" records that out of some 720 Accrington Pals who took part in the attack, 584 were killed, wounded or missing.

This memorial is in Accrington.
