Heroic Rose

The red floribunda that I found languishing under trees when I came here has flowers at the top of the bush, almost six feet up. Last month it was flattened and buried under snow for the best part of a week.

In the background, the three narrow-leaved lacebarks brought from my Christchurch garden as seedlings, have not done so well. They should have dense, pale green foliage with no holes to let the light through, but like many of my native evergreens the leaves were killed off by the unusually cold conditions that came with the snow. This has never happened before. I don't know if the trees will recover in the spring.
