Australian coots......

.....are cosmopolitan and self-introduced, inhabiting lakes in the North Island, Canterbury and Otago. They belong to the rail family but are essentially aquatic birds. Coots are distinguishable with their prominent white frontal shields, pointed bills and overall sooty colour. They are largely vegetarian feeding on aquatic plants like this coot, looks likes he's going to choke but he didn't. Coots are common, protected and native.

Lovely day to be out and about after a hard frost this morning, calm with blue skies and rather cold. I didn't stay out for long as I found the light far to bright for my eyes, but it was great to get some fresh air and have a wander.

Yesterday's blip is up if anyone is interested, a late offering for flower Friday, taken yesterday and put up today due to my eyes.

Must fly as hubby will be home for tea - nachos tonight, nice and easy.

Happy Saturday everyone :)

Scientific name: Fulica atra australis
