Time Out

Chessmen don't have wooden hearts,
but sometimes they will harden.
That's when kings and queens agree
to Time Out in a garden.

This is appearance #32 of my Chessmen. They last appeared here.

The little tree was one of hundreds of seedlings that I weeded from a garden over fifteen years ago to grow as a Bonsai specimen. I'm probably not doing it properly, but I enjoy watching it come into leaf each spring. The seedhead flowers, as tall as the chessmen, are Devon violets. Another delight each spring.

The kings and queens, I'm sure, find it very calming after chessboard battles. Especially when the sun shines. (Yes, it is shining today. But sssh! - it may not last.)
