Bonar Bridge

Day 7

Opened in December 1973, it won a Structural Steel Design Award in 1974. Consulting Engineers : Crouch and Hogg. I think this bowstring arch design has a well proportioned, simple elegance about it. It crosses the Kyles of Sutherland on the upper Dornoch Firth. It is the third bridge to cross the water at this point. The first, designed by Thomas Telford, was opened in 1812. It was swept away in a flood in January 1892 and rebuilt by July 1893.

We had a day of "Blipping Bridges". We crossed and photographed the Beauly, Dornoch, Bonar and Conon bridges. Long journeys by roads and ferries before all of these were built. Stunning scenery in this of Scotland.

We also visited Dornoch Cathedral, which has stunning stained glass and the Falls of Shin where the salmon are already leaping.
