Despite our late-night driving and despite being woken by small-hour carousers on the towpath, we started early this morning so we could get to the Black Country Living Museum with plenty of time to look round.

It happened to be 1940s weekend and a huge number of impressively-costumed visitors and volunteers were doing re-enactments. The 8-year-old we'd borrowed for the day was entranced.

As was I, watching iron chain being forged.
