The Lozarithm Lens

Marlborough (Sunday 17th July 2016)

This weekend both Marlborough In Bloom and the Marlborough Jazz Festival were taking place so l almost avoided driving over on Sunday, as I imagined a closed High Street, parking bays coned off, hordes of people and a cacophony of disparate musical stands that created a musical mud, but there were a few items of shopping that I needed and so I braved it, knowing that at least the Waitrose car park was available and free of charge (Sunday).

I was pleasantly surprised. My shopping was successful and complete by 1525 hr, the main road was not closed off, as is clear from this blip of the High Street, and the bands were mostly playing in venues such as pubs and cafés so one got pleasant sounds emanating as one wandered past, such as The Lamb on the Parade; not only jazz but rhythm and blues and world fusion music. It was mindblowingly warm, however.

I of course visited the Waterfront at Kennet Place and admired the spectacular floral displays and watched the moorhens, who had produced a second brood of chicks. No sign of the water voles again. The judging is to take place on Tuesday and I hope they do well.

I thought I'd seen Tom and a partner on the river as I drove over the Pewsey Road Bridge, so I explored on foot later on. At first I saw only ducks and Canada geese but after awhile Old Tom appeared from around the river bend and glided back and forth in a stately and elegant fashion (see Extra).

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder (recorded 21 December 21 1963, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs NJ)
Lee Morgan (hard bop trumpet), Joe Henderson (tenor sax), Barry Harris (bop piano), Bob Cranshaw (double bass), Billy Higgins (drums)
The Penguin Guide to Jazz described this as "a glorious 24-bar theme as sinuous and stinging as the beast of the title. It was both the best and worst thing that was ever to happen to Morgan before the awful events of 19 February 1972", when he was gunned down by his wife in Slug's Saloon, a jazz club in New York City's East Village where he was playing, after an altercation. He bled to death after a slow ambulance response in blizzard conditions.
This track appeared in the soundtrack of the film Joy that came out last year. It  features Jennifer Lawrence in the title role based on the true rags-to-riches story of an inventor, and also stars Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper. I watched it at home on this evening.
