Morlancourt

On 5/6th May 1916 my grandfather won the Military Medal at Morlancourt and 12 days later my other grandfather's brother also won one in the same area.
Thanks to the research skills of our Battlefields Tour guide, Denis, we were able to find the general locality where their gallant deeds occurred.
It was an emotional moment and we ceremoniously threw poppies into the field.
I was grateful to find it such a picturesque location, not a built up area with a McDonalds on site.

Our full day tour took us to Pozieres, Mouquet Farm, Theipval, Albert, Villers-Bretonneux, Morlancourt, Vaux sur Somme (where the Red Baron was brought down) and many memorials and war cemeteries.

It was wonderful to see how well maintained and respected these sites are.
Also, I didn't expect that the area would be so like I imagined. None of the devastation of the old war photos of course but the terrain and and tree lined roads all looked strangely familiar.
