Neuve Chapelle Indian Monument

This was, perhaps, the primary destination of our group ... part of the Jullundur Brigade study trip. This powerful, calm and enclosed memorial sits on the side of a mini-roundabout on the edge of a tiny village. It is pock-marked with shrapnel damage ... but the sculptures are calm and dignified. Here we laid our wreath and held our own short act of remembrance.

From here we moved to Festerbert and Givenchy ... where we learnt more about the tunnellers WW1 experiences and say their own small monument. It too was sober and dignified ... with a bottle of beer left as a gift perhaps!
