The Wheat Fields

During the battle of Gettysburg, the Union troops lined up on the east ridges while the Southern troops lined up on the west edges of the valley.        One of the significant fronts, of many, Is the one at the Wheat Fields.  The Confederate troops fought their way across the wheat fields and the Peach orchards to try and dislodge the Northern boys from the homes.  According to the battle details, the attack was a draw, with thousands killed.  It did help to set up another skirmish near Big round Top and Little Round Top a bit south of this area.  There the southern troops had to cross the Devils Den and The Killing Fields.
As an aside, the house and barn you see in the photo was lived in at the time, by the family that worked the land.  The roof and windows have been restored, but the house is original, as it was during the war.
