This is the house my dad was born in...

... it looks like a tiny cottage from this street but it goes right down to sea level so is actually quite big. It needed to be; he had more than 11 siblings though at no time did they all live there at the same time. The eldest had stowed away to Australia before the youngest (my dad) was born. It has a beautiful view over the  harbour but my dad's memories were that as a young child he was afraid to go down the stairs alone.

His grandfather was a master mariner who moved to Guernsey from Goole. Family tradition has it that he was Harbourmaster of St Peter Port Harbour and when off duty could watch over the harbour from the window of his house and if something displeased him he would shout instructions. A lovely legend but there is no evidence to suggest it is true.
