St. Gabriel's Church - Stanbury

This delightful small church was built in Stanbury in 1848 as a 'Chapel of Ease' for villagers who could not easily get to the main church in Haworth.
Patrick Bronte was the man who initiated the building, but it was also the year that his only son Branwell and his daughter Emily both died.
Patrick’s curate, Arthur Bell Nicholls, took a particular interest in the project and he oversaw its construction.  It is believed that Charlotte taught in the Sunday School here and in 1854 (with the reluctant agreement of her father) she and Arthur Bell Nicholls were married.
It is still a fully functional church with a small but enthusiastic congregation.  The roof is in urgent need of repair (estimate £45,000) and a fund has been established to facilitate the project.
Update:
According to a report in the ‘Church Times’ (only 4 days ago) it has been awarded a grant of £33,800 by the Government’s Listed Places of Worship Fund.  :-)  :-)
